Son of Margaret Gaskell of Yealand Redmayne. The 1901 census shows Fred is 6 years old and is living with Margeret Gaskell and his grandparents Matthew Gaskell (68) and Ellen (63). The 1911 census moved to a nearby property as a farm labourer (servant) and is shown as Frederick. He died of his wounds in Dover, Kent.
