He was born on 14 November 1895 to James (born in Capernwray) and Gertrude (born Salford) Airey from Lancaster. He was married to Annie Walker.
He died of his wounds at Netley Hospital, Hampshire. His sister flew over from Canada and was with him when he died. As a former resident of Yealand he is buried in the churchyard.
